DANDELION WISHES
20" x 30"
Palette knife textured acrylic on box canvas

This piece was commissioned after Angela saw "Believe In The Wish... And It Will come True" (see further down) as she was after something original and contemporary to go in her newly-decorated lounge.

She said, "It's perfect and has made me really happy. My husband treated himself to a new car - so I treated myself to this".

And why not, indeed!

Snoopy recently went off to the Big Kennel In The Sky. As you can see from the portrait, he was very playful and was totally loved by his hoomans. Mum Hooman had this portrait commissioned as a surprise for Dad Hooman's birthday.

Alex said:, "My awesome wife got this painting done for me for my birthday of the best dog in the world. Thankyou to the amazing artist Kay Ashton."

POLICE FAMILY 12" x 16" oil on board

Inspired by 'The Right Side of the Law', Karolyn was inspired to have her own still life portrait done; creating lots of memories of her career before she retired in 2018.

Karolyn says, "I always knew that artists can express their feelings through their work;  what I didnt know when I asked Kay to paint a picture in relation to my past is how it would affect me. It evoked memories back to 1992 and the start of my chosen career.

Also a mixture of exhilaration and anxiousness - but also excitement - that I experienced as a young probationary constable.

Kay's work is fantastic, we communicated throughout the piece and I am delighted and cannot wait to get it up on my wall."

BELIEVE IN THE WISH... AND IT WILL COME TRUE
18" x 26"
palette knife textured acrylic on mdf

This was an incredibly therapeutic piece that Claire asked Kay to paint, an idea she had formed that depicts belief and hope in a brighter future. It is a very personal statement for her and it hangs in her bedroom so she is reminded of that bright future every time she sees it in her room.

THE TRAIN GUARD 12" x 16"" oil on canvas

This commission was a surprise birthday gift for Liz's husband, Alex. He was over the moon with his painting and said, "Kay captures, in the painting from an actual photo, the inspirational moment which reflected my achievement of becoming a passenger guard volunteer on the East Lancashire Railway".

Liz said, "Thanks to Kay for helping to surprise Alex with a special birthday present. The painting is absolutely fantastic and better than I expected it to be.

It hangs with pride in Alex's office. We can’t thank Kay enough . Highly recommend Kay’s work".

BOB'S PLACE 16" x 20" oil on box canvas

"After asking Kay to paint a special portrait of our son (Jamie Blue Eyes), we were so pleased with the piece that we asked her to create another piece, this time a truly special painting which would become “Bobs Place”

It was two photographs merged into one of a special place and a special family member who is no longer with us. Once again the final piece was breathtaking.

So if your looking for an artist then we highly recommend Kay.

POPS'S GIRL oil on box canvas 16" x 20"

Your work is beautiful! Thank you."

LUNCH WITH A VIEW 18" x 24"

Having already commissioned Kay for a family painting, and being delighted with the end product, there was only one person to request to paint ‘Lunch With a View’ for us.

We visit the Lake District in March every year and it’s a very special place for us. We decided to summit Grisedale Pike with our daughter, aged 10. It was set to be her biggest ‘conquest’ to date. The weather was on our side and the views on our ascent (as we paused for a break) were certainly rewarding. We reached the summit in the snow line and stopped to take in the amazing vista. We soon settled down to enjoy our picnic and more importantly, the view.

Steve took a walk and captured our daughter and I enjoying sandwiches with a flask of tea. A perfect moment of happiness, achievement and stepping out of her comfort zone (our family strap line!).

We knew instantly that this was one of those photos that had to last a lifetime. It was all captured in a truly amazing painting that will continue to make us smile and reminisce for years to come.

JAMIE BLUE EYES oil on box canvas 16" x 20"

"After months and months of looking for an artist to do a painting of my son for a surprise for his mum, I eventually found Kay. I really do drop lucky. I have had an idea of what I wanted and away she went and created “Jamie Blue eyes”. The piece will forever be with us.

We then gave Kay another idea that we had for a truly special painting which would become “Bobs place”. We asked Kay to merge two photographs into one: one of a special place and the other a special family member who is no longer with us. Once again the final piece was breathtaking. So if your looking for an artist then we highly recommend Kay."

A VERY SPECIAL MEMORY 16" X 12"

This painting was transformed into a painting from a reference picture which was taken in Ladram Bay, Cornwall.

This very special memory for mum and dad because their daughter, who is sat in the middle of them in this piece, passed away recently after a battle with cancer.

NEVAEH oil on canvas 16" x 20"

This little one really is an angel. Her name is Nevaeh which is 'heaven' spelled backwards!

This was commissioned by her grandma as it the piece shows what a beaty Nevaeh is, inside and out, and she loves being a princess, so the outfit had to be included, too!

Her grandma said, "I met Kay at a 50th birthday party where she presented a picture she had completed of the host's dog - I was amazed how talented she was!

I wanted her to do a portrait of my granddaughter, who is always happy and has a beautiful personality.

Kay has captured every detail - very pleased with it!"

NOTRE PETITE COCHINELLE (Our Little Ladybird) oil on canvas 18" x 24"

This piece was commissioned for this young lady's 18th birthday, as a surprise by her grandma. Grandma lives in Bournemouth and her grandaughter lives in Switzerland, and is half English and half Portuguese - hence the three flags depicted in the background to represent her heritage.

She has been dancing since she was a little girl, when she was nicknamed Our Little Ladybird, and this oil painting shows her in a ballet show not so long ago. How far our little ladybird has come, don't you think?

FOUR FIVES oil on canvas 20" x 30"

"We were looking to commission a special family painting and having seen some of Kay’s previous work, we didn’t hesitate to get in touch. We found the ideal photo of a family holiday snap; the four of us on the bow of a friends boat having had a fabulous day on the Côte d’Azur. Kay caught the moment perfectly, from the glistening Mediterranean waters to the beautiful dusky skies, not to mention the four of us - everything was captured brilliantly. Kay even added a personalised touch to the painting for us to enjoy asking friends & family to find! Kay brought the framed finished piece over to us and we were thrilled with it. I felt quite emotional! It’s featured in a prominent position in the house where we can look at and enjoy it every day!"

POTTY FOR PEONIES oil on canvas 20" x 20"
Beautiful peonies displayed in a chamber pot in a loose cascading fashion - very specific remit for this commission by the internationally published texural floral artist, Clare Sykes. The third and final commission for this lovely lady and this one was for none other than herself, because they are her favourite flowers.  Absolutely delighted with this painting - as was Clare.

A MAGIC MOMENT oil on canvas 30" x 30"

The second of the three specially commissioned pieces by the global flower texture artist, Clare Sykes. This was was for her mum's birthday. A plethora of colouful blooms -  violet irises, deep salmon pink alstroemeria and vivid large sunflowers all bursting from the delicate vase where they vye for the spotlight. This piece will command a large wall to dominate, without doubt, but Clare knew exactly what she had in mind when she commissioned the piece. We went through the early stages of composition, etc, together before settling on this one. The rest was left to me.

Gorgeous little Beej, who passed away a couple of years ago, has been forever immortalised in this pastel painting. Commissioned by her daughter and dad for a special birthday for her mum whom doted on Beej; of course she was her baby. I felt very honoured to be asked to paint her. BUTTERMERE LAKE oil on canvas 18" x 24"

A surprise 50th birthday gift from her husband: a painting of a favourite walk of theirs in the Lake District, Cumbria. This painting was taken specifically from a photo his wife had taken herself, one which she loved, so it made it all the more special!

Taken totally by surprise and utterly delighted, Janine wasn't sure who to hug first, her husband for coming up with the idea or me for painting it! (I was privileged to be present when she opened her painting).  She said "Mike commissioned Kay to paint a scene from the Lake District for me as a surprise 50th birthday present. My favourite lake is Buttermere, and Mike borrowed from my computer a digital photo that I had taken of Buttermere a few years ago and emailed it to Kay to paint.  When I opened the present on my birthday I was blown away by it's quality and authenticity. I instantly recognised the scene and will treasure the painting forever".

MY TIME oil on canvas 16" x 12"

The first of three specially commissioned pieces by the internationally renown flower textural artist, Clare Sykes, for her father who always says "Aaahhh... my time!" as he pours himself his well deserved tipple. This piece was done from scratch - from gathering the items (it was tough drinking that gin and tonic but it's all in the name of art) to setting up the composition, photographing, rearranging, etc, and finally painting the piece all with Clare's input throughout the process. There is a brilliant video on my Facebook page when he unwraps his painting on his birthday. Click here to view it.

OFF TO GRANDMAS oil on canvas board 8" x 12"

A special christmas present for a special grandma. Vicky wanted something special for her mum and this was the result. A lovely little piece of which grandmas was over the moon with when she opened it on Christmas morning (the delightful video can be viewed on my Facebook page here).

Vicky said "The original reference photo was taken on a long walk, from taking the picture to Kay, she could visualise this as a painting and advised on the best way to draw/paint using the best materials. I couldnt wait to see how it would turn out. It was easy to arrange and delivered perfectly on time. The gift giving to Grandma was the best of all, it made her cry...  even more so as she had always wanted one of Kay's original paintings - now she had her very own. I would recommend commissioning Kay to do any of your paintings, she is wonderful, and her creations are brilliant!"

LOVE BIRDS oil on canvas, 16" x 16"

A second commission from Louise in the black and white genre to match DEVON (see below). This one was for Christmas. I absolutely adore this painting and it speaks volumes about them - a very relaxed and happy pose. "Wow, he is going to be so made up with this" was Louise's initial reaction. Devon was indeed made up with it when he opened it on Christmas morning and said "Oh this is amazing, it's brilliant, I can't believe this is a painting, it looks like a photo!"

Louise Bird, Warrington, Cheshire.

DEVON oil on box canvas, 12" x 12"

Commissioned for a special birthday - Devon sat astride his beloved motorbike. This painting was taken from a reference whereby the background was half of a kitchen window and a brick wall. The great thing about art is you can use your artistic licence to add or remove things for the good of the painting. Which is what I did here. Doing the piece in monochrome, too, also added to the style as it was done on a box canvas, so no need for framing. "He is going to be over the moon with this" said his girlfriend. And she was right. He was.

AUTUMN AT BROSELEY CROFT oil on canvas 16" x 12"

This stunning display of colour covering this home in autumn was a delight to do. The colours that were present in the leaves and flowers were a bewildering array of reds, purples, greens, peaches... what a total joy it was to be able to paint them in such a beautiful painting. Samantha, who commissioned the painting said  "Kay Ashton is so clever! She's created this beautiful painting from a simple photo taken on an iPhone. The colours are simply stunning along with the intricate detail... it's really brought the subject to life, a beloved home. I can't wait to see my brother-in-law's face when I present him with this for his 70th birthday. PS she organised framing too! Perfect!"😍.

CONTEMPLATING HAROLD soft and hard pastel, pastel pencils on pastelmat

This beauty was commissioned by Steve for his wife. This is her father in his younger days and it is the only photograph she has of him. It was getting tatty and dog-eared so after having seen my Old Blokes In Boozers series of pastel paintings in sepia he hit on the idea to turn his wife's small photo into a pastel painting. A very thoughtful Christmas gift, even if I say so myself. His wife was overjoyed with it. What a beautiful sentiment.

THE DUCHESS (WURLITZER) oil on canvas, 16" x 20"

I have been asked to paint some things but never one of these before. This beauty is the world famous Wurlitzer that is housed in the grand ballroom in the tower at Blackpool. Surprised Mel said "I have many pictures of various pipe organs but when I was presented with this stunning painting of the Tower Ballroom WurliTzer I was amazed.  It truly captures both the beauty and grace of what is, in my opinion, one of the finest WurliTzer installations in the world.  It now has pride of place in my 'den' and as the Mighty beast plays, my eyes are constantly drawn to this fabulous artwork.  Thank you so very much". Now there's a compliment.

MY WORLD oil on canvas, 18" x 24"

Well, what a project and a half this was. This gentleman has the most amazing garden in north Wales, where he lives, that he has built from nothing over forty years ago. Green fingers doesn't come close and it really is his world. His daughter commissioned this painting for him as she is so proud of what he has achieved with it. I went along to the house with my camera under the pretence of taking photos of his wonderful flowers for my still life paintings. I hid behind trees and all kinds when he wasn't looking to snap him working away. I came away with hundreds of snaps that we eventually filtered down to a few, and this was the result. I was rather nervous as I knew that he knows his garden like the back of his hand, so had to be precise with what plants and flowers were where! I am immensely proud of this painting and am honoured to have been asked to do it. Oh, and her dad loved it, too. Phew!

Commissioned by a young lady who's sister was about to have her third child; a baby sister for two sons to complete their beautiful family. FROM ENGAGEMENT TO MARRIAGE!

oil on canvas

Something a little different. This montage of images contained in one painting tells the story of Bernie proposing to his wife at the top of the Empire State Building whilst on holiday in New York. Once she said yes, off to 5th Avenue to buy the rings... and then it ended in a lovely marriage ceremony in none other than the famous Greta Green. Bernie commissioned this painting as a surprise gift for his wife for their wedding anniversary. It was done in top secret so she would not suspect a thing. A wonderfully romantic idea for your other half, it really tells the tale of their whirlwind romance.

ANNE oil on canvas 5:x 7"

A small daily painting commissioned by a special friend for herself. She wanted three items on the shelf that she has always associated with her childhood years, back in the 1950's. Again, a very specific brief was given, the items being the pink round NHS glasses, a stack of books with Anne Of Green Gables on top and a green Roberts wireless. A very different daily painting from the norm but what a challenge. Painted alla prima.  Anne said "Oh it's wonderful, it takes me right back. Thank you!"

RECKLESS

Commissioned by his mum, this painting of Gary aka Reckless Anxiety - the fastest rapper in the UK (check him out on YouTube) - was taken from a snap that a friend had taken of him. Perfect timing; he captured Gary sneezing. His mum loves this picture as she feels it just captures his personality, it is "just him".  This painting now hangs on her wall at home, in Portugal.

ANNE-MARIE oil on canvas 5:x 7"

A small daily painting done for a birthday gift for my friend. Having known her for over thirty years, I kind of thought I now her well enough to put a little alla prima painting together. CYRIL MINTZ - A TALE OF TWO PORTRAITS

oil on stretched canvas, 12" x 16"

Commissioned to paint not one but two identical portraits of a very well loved and respected primary school headmaster from Salford who died recently. Portrait number one (first photo) was presented to the current headmaster at Cyril's old school, Blackfriars Primary, in Salford where the portrait of the great man (all four foot ten of him) will reside, and the second portrait is for Anver's own private collection. "Cyril was a life long Manchester City supporter since 1937" he said. "There are so many people in Salford who came under his care over the years and I think this is a wonderful way to remember him". The badge on the lapel of the first painting is the original MCFC logo from 1937, to signify his birth and the logo on the second painting is of the current MCFC badge to signify his passing earlier this year.   Prints on fine art paper or box canvas are available to purchase.

Lindsay commissioned this painting as as surprise for her husband for their wedding anniversary. It tells the story of their very first meeting, when Mark came up from London.. A wonderful tale and I was very honoured to be able to capture a very special moment in their lives.

I MISS HER, TOO

pastel and pastel pencils on pastelmat

."I really enjoy the Salford Forum on Facebook as I am a bit nostalgic for my home town especially as I now live so far way. It was on this forum  that I spotted a fabulous painting - by what turned out to be Kay Ashton - of an old bloke in a pub with his faithful dog at his side. It caught my eye immediately and Kay was asking for us to suggest a title for it. I've seen this scene many times, a lonely old fella with his dog, enjoying a pint; a quiet evening contemplating his own solitude or it could even be loneliness over his pint of mild. I thought perhaps he was alone because his old girl had 'gone on' and he was probably thinking about her from time to time but then it struck me: perhaps the dog missed his 'mum' too so I suggested the name "I Miss Her, Too" and Kay paid me the great honour of using that as the title for the painting. There remained only one thing to do... I bought it!  And soon it will be gracing one of the walls in my home. Kay really captured a time that I remember, I can almost reach into this painting and order a pint and a packet of crisps from the bar and perhaps sit with the old fella and his dog and maybe - if I'm lucky - he'll tell me his story... I was so impressed with Kay's work that I commissioned two other pieces from her, with which I'm absolutely delighted. Kay has a great eye for the detail and is a delight to meet in real life.

"I absolutely love this picture for many reasons; the colours and the sunset/sunrise which really makes you think about what is going on out there and how innocent and naive the children are about and the world they have to grow up in today. This is so much more than just a painting, it is so thought provoking. And it's my two girls who are in this piece. I can't thank Kay enough for her hard work and dedication; she really is an amazing woman and, of course - painter!"

SET OF NINE DAILY PAINTINGS

5" x 7" oil on canvas board

Set of nine original daily paintings were bought for a surprise wedding anniversary gift. One of the painting was commissioned as it was her husband's favourite food combination - white onion and parmesan.  "He is going to love these!" Sarah said. She was not wrong - her husband, Aiden,  tweeted me  "@KayAshton45 Thank you for our pictures - a perfect anniversary present from my gorgeous wife, Sarah" and went on to add "Love them - especially this one - white onion and parmesan is my favourite marriage of ingredients" once he had opened them. These will be hung in their new kitchen at home when it is done.

Coxwain's Dawn I and II
Oil on canvas 14" x 36"

Commissioned to do these two wonderful paintings - yes they are two individual paintings of the same image - of the iconic Liver Building along with the rest of the Liverpool skyline and the River Mersey at dawn from the perspective of a working boat. A wonderful panoramic image which was magical to paint, seen as I have visited many times as it is not too far from me. Lee, who commissioned the two paintings as gifts for two of his friends, quite often captures stunning images with his camera, and this one was no exception. Throughout painting these two panoramic views, I was aware that I did not want to make to identical pictures; there are subtle differences in each painting to give it that touch of individuality. Can you spot them?

"Wow, over the moon with these two paintings and so will my two mates be when they receive them! I am a huge fan of Kay's artwork to start with, so this makes these commissioned paintings extra special. I have no idea how she does it. Amazing".

Lee Baron, Great Sankey, Cheshire.

Bruce the cat is in actual fact a girl. And a gorgeous girl at that, a beloved pet who passed away ten years ago and made such an impression on Carol, her owner, that all these years later she is still talked about and now immortalised in oils. "There will NEVER be another Brucie. Your painting is just so wonderful; you have captured her beautiful eyes perfectly. It was a 60th birthday present to myself. Thank you so much".

Carol Lawrence, Wigan, Lancashire.

The Little Beach With Dad (Rhosneigr)
Oil on canvas, 20" x 30"

"I asked Kay to paint the little beach with dad following his passing at the end of 2014, I had always loved the photo when I took it following an overnight stay at the family house on Anglesey with him and it's another wonderful memory that I will hold dear in my heart and mind for as long as I live. All you can leave people in the end to measure your existence by are the memories you leave behind and thank you Kay for helping capture mine on canvas and helping to evoke such wonderful feelings and happiness"

Paul Linderman, Blackpool, Lancashire.

All Of Me Loves All Of You

Oil on canvas. 20" x 30".
"Dave and I would both like to thank Kay for our amazing painting. This was a gift I purchased for David for our first wedding anniversary and it was absolutely perfect, this was our favourite photograph and to now have it in a painting is wonderful! Everyone has commented on how great it is and on how talented you are!! A huge huge thank you, it's now our favourite thing xxx"
Katy and Dave Leather, Warrington, Cheshire.

This was their first dance of the evening and their chosen song being - you guessed it - "All Of Me Loves All Of You", the beautiful classic by John Legend. Thus the artwork name was born. I cannot tell you the joy I had in painting those beautiful red tresses on the bride, the glow of the pink light capturing so many different highlights in her hair. The whole painting was a joy to do, as are the couple it was painted for.

 STORYTIME.  Oil on box canvas.

This painting captures a very special time between Jessica and her nan; a time for a cuddle and a story. Commissioned by Kim who wanted to immortalise her mum and daughter in one special painting, one that will be treasured through the generations to come. I think she has achieved it, don't you? An absolute joy from start to finish for me, this one.

Kim Bird, Warrington, Cheshire

JUMP! Oil on canvas.
A commission done for a friend from a phtograph she took of her daughters and husband whilst on holiday. She loved it and thought it would make a great painting - and she was right! It took a while to do as it was done on a large canvas with many layers but it was a delight to paint. I wasn't the only one pleased with the end result... " Oh I just love it! This will be in our family forever - it will be handed down, I hope, and remain on the wall for all to see. Thank you!"

Sarah Groves, Warrington, Cheshire.
